Home Inspectors Grandview Heights, Ohio

Grandview Heights, Ohio is a small city, with old roots, located in the Columbus metropolitan area between the Olentangy and the Scioto Rivers and bordered on the north by Upper Arlington and on the south by the city of Columbus.  It is a solid city that prides itself on its dedication and commitment to securing and supporting a full and fulfilling quality of life.

To Clarify - Is It Grandview Heights or Grandview?

The official name of the city is Grandview Heights, Ohio.  If you live someplace other than Columbus, Ohio, you will refer to this city as Grandview Heights, Ohio – especially if you want information about Grandview Heights, Ohio.  But if you move to the area, after you’ve lived here a while, you’ll see and hear that a lot of people call this city Grandview – just plain Grandview.  And this can be confusing – especially if you’re coming from someplace else – because there is also a Grandview, Ohio.  You’ll find it in the southwest corner of the state.

So just to be clear – we’re talking about Grandview Heights, Ohio.

A Brief Historical Point of View...

Grandview Heights was originally part of Marble Cliff in the late 1800s.  Marble Cliff came to be a “lovely summer home” location for well-heeled Columbus families.  By 1906, Grandview Heights became its own village.  The two have been separate ever since – separate entities but very good friends.  Marble Cliff, notably smaller than Grandview Heights, contracts with its larger neighbor for such things as fire and police protection, library, parks and recreation, schools.  And Grandview Heights is proud to share the heritage of the carriage trade beginnings of Marble Cliff.

And How Is Grandview Heights Today?

From the beginning, Marble Cliff was home to some very grand residences.  The Sherman Bush Mansion is in Marble Cliff.  Yes, of the Bushes that went on to produce two US Presidents.  Grandview Heights grew in a somewhat less grand way but substantial – quiet, sedated – in its own way through the 1920s.

After World War II, the general spirit of growth resulted in the building of many multi-family buildings, as well as industrial and shopping centers.  Grandview Heights, Ohio supported a successful and expanding community but always it remained a solid family environment.

And that is what you find today – a community that offers and enjoys countless opportunities to enjoy life.  There are leisure and educational experiences for all citizens from young to senior.  The Parks and Recreation department is a rich source for fun, games and a general pursuit of happiness.  Swimming, tennis, picnics – anyone?

Grandview Heights has its own independent school system.  Education reflective and representative of the neighborhoods – that’s what you have in this city.  Residents have a say in something as important to them as school and the education of their children.  Residents have a different expectation about being heard – an expectation possible in a small city.

Grandview Heights offers a wide range of resource and activity – still supportive to and centered in family living.

If you’re considering this community, you should also remember it shares a border with Columbus itself.  All the resource that is Columbus is readily available – museums, the university, business, the capital.

Keep in mind Columbus is some 200 square miles in size.  By comparison, Grandview Heights is 1.4 square miles.  Grandview Heights offers the small city experience but its citizens are never far from the much larger world of Columbus.  This is a combination that’s worked for Grandview Heights from its beginnings.

Grandview Heights is a neighborhood.  You see your neighbors at the pool or playing tennis.  This is a town that offers a way of life as valuable today as it was in 1906.  Lots has happened since then – there’s no doubt more to come – and still Grandview Heights is worth your consideration.

There are a number of apartment buildings but you will also find single family and twin single homes that are well designed and one of a kind...and streets and roads that wind.  You will find character and personality...Grandview Heights will charm you.  Grandview is described in words like “fashionable” and “tony” and “gentrified.”  Yuppies – if they still exist – may be moving to Grandview.  There is an art film theatre – the Drexel – in Grandview Heights... and a couple of interesting coffee houses . . . more than a few good restaurants.  They say that OSU professors like to live in Grandview.

Folks talk about a growing interest in a return to urban.  Grandview Heights is uniquely positioned to make the most of this interest.  It’s closer to urban than suburban with still a fine style.  You find a solid, traditional style in much of its building.  Grandview Heights buildings – single family homes, twin singles, apartments/condos, industrial or retail – have been built to last.  Renovation is worth the effort.  Grandview Heights is worth renovation, merits investment.  The community supports the hopes and expectations of newcomers and this speaks well for the future of the whole community.

And Last but Not Least ... the Circus Walk

When the Ringling Brothers/Barnum & Bailey Circus comes to Columbus, it comes by train.  And that train stops in Grandview Heights...to let the animals off for their visit to Columbus.  We’re talking about the Circus Walk!  The parade of circus animals as they come to town – can you imagine the excitement?  You’ll find the Circus Walk route at the official Grandview Heights website.  The whole community turns out to enjoy the parade.  Just in case you miss the arrival, they do the walk again when the circus leaves town.  In Grandview Heights, Ohio you can see the circus off as they catch their train.
